Those are all jobs a smart sensor can handle.
The problem is that shopping for them can quickly get confusing. Some sensors need a hub. Others use Wi-Fi. Newer models use Matter and Thread. Some work only within a particular ecosystem, while others can work across several smart-home platforms.
And if you live in a small apartment, you probably don’t want to spend money building a complicated system just to put a few sensors around your home.
So instead of giving you a giant list of sensors and calling them all “the best,” this guide takes a more practical approach.

Water-leak sensors have a completely different job. Place one under a sink or near an appliance and it can alert you if water reaches the sensor before you happen to notice the problem yourself.
Temperature and humidity sensors help you understand what’s happening inside the apartment. They can be useful if one bedroom gets unusually warm, a room feels stuffy, or you’re trying to monitor humidity rather than simply guessing what is going on.
That’s why I wouldn’t approach this as a shopping exercise where you find the highest-rated sensor and buy it. Start with the problem.
If you don’t have a problem that a sensor solves, you probably don’t need the sensor.
Do You Need a Hub for Smart Sensors?
This is one of the first things to understand before buying anything.
Some smart sensors connect directly to Wi-Fi. Others use a lower-power wireless connection to communicate with a hub, which then connects the sensor system to your network and app.

You can start with door and window sensors, then add motion detection, water-leak detection or temperature monitoring as you need them. Those devices can work within the same Tapo ecosystem, so you aren’t starting over every time you want to add another type of sensor.
That matters more in a small apartment than it might in a large house. Probably because you don’t need a sophisticated whole-home automation system. You just need a handful of small devices that quietly solve specific problems.

And that’s really why Tapo stands out here.

That makes it particularly useful for the entry points that deserve more attention in a small apartment.
You could use one on a ground-floor bedroom window, an accessible balcony door, a secondary entrance or a window that can be reached from a fire escape or neighboring structure.
You don’t need one on every window. In fact, I wouldn’t recommend that.
If you’re renting a small apartment, the point is to identify the entry points that actually matter and cover those rather than turning every opening in the apartment into another device to manage.
The T110 works with the Tapo hub and can send notifications when the monitored door or window opens.
Why I like it for a small apartment
The biggest advantage isn’t that it has a long list of features. It’s that it solves one very specific problem with a tiny device that can be installed without drilling.
If you’re mainly concerned about an accessible window, that’s exactly the sort of upgrade that makes sense.
If you already have a Tapo system, it also gives you a straightforward way to expand it without introducing another brand or another app.
One thing to remember: the T110 is part of the Tapo hub-based system. If you don’t already have the required hub, factor that into the cost rather than looking only at the price of the sensor itself.
2. Best Smart Motion Sensor for a Small Apartment: Tapo T100
A motion sensor sounds like a security product, but that is only one use for it.

Should you buy one?
If you’re comfortable in your apartment and have no reason to monitor temperature or humidity, skip it. I mean that.

But I would not tell a beginner that Matter automatically makes Aqara or Eve a better choice than Tapo. It depends on what you already own.
If you already have compatible Matter and Thread equipment in your home, a Matter-over-Thread sensor can make a lot of sense.
If you don’t, you need to check exactly what additional equipment is required before buying one.
That’s particularly important with the Aqara P2. The sensor itself is not the entire system. You need compatible Matter and Thread infrastructure for it to communicate with your chosen smart-home platform.
So I would think about it this way:
Starting from scratch? Tapo is easier to understand as a coordinated sensor ecosystem.
Already invested in Matter and Thread? Aqara or Eve may be a better fit because you can add the sensor to the system you already have.

Which Smart Sensor Setup Makes Sense for You?

My Small-Apartment Sensor Setup
If I were starting from scratch in a small rental apartment, I’d make the decision based on the problems I wanted to solve rather than trying to build a complete smart home on day one.
For someone who wants several door and window sensors, the Tapo T31 KIT is an interesting place to start because it combines the H100 hub with three T110 contact sensors.
From there, I’d add the T100 if I wanted motion-based lighting or activity detection.
I’d add the T300 if I wanted protection against water leaks.
And I’d add the T315 only if monitoring temperature and humidity would actually be useful to me.
If I already had a Matter and Thread setup, however, I wouldn’t start another ecosystem just for the sake of following this recommendation. I’d look at something such as the Aqara P2 or Eve Door & Window and see whether it fits the system I already own.
